Cone Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT)

We are pleased to announce the purchase, installation and completion of training for a Kodak 9000 Cone Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT) and digital panorex machine for use in Endodontic cases.  Along with an acquisition computer and networked high speed 3-D viewing workstations, digital CT and panorex scans can be made and immediately displayed to patients in their operatory along with existing digital periapical/bitewing images and intraoral/microscope photography.  This imaging information is a powerful tool in Endodontic diagnosis, treatment, prognosis determination and patient education.

Its many uses include:

  • The correct diagnosis of dental pain and periapical pathologies.

  • Treatment planning of retreatment and surgical cases.

  • Accurate 3-dimensional locations of adjacent structures to teeth: i.e. mental foramen, maxillary sinus, inferior alveolar canal, and neighboring teeth and/or implants.

  • Extent and location of internal/external resorption of roots and their long term prognosis.

  • Identification and evaluation of radiolucencies/radiopacities: their true location and likely etiology as an aid in diagnosis and treatment planning.

  • Identification and location of missed canals or perforations.

  • Determination of alveolar bone fracture (trauma) or root fracture: Should the tooth be extracted?

  • Endo? Perio? Combination lesions?

  • Detailed extraoral imaging for cases where intraoral images are impossible: i.e. gaggers, anxious/sedation-anesthesia patients, pediatric cases.

The Kodak 9000 machine has an industry leading 76 micron (0.076mm) CT resolution and produces a narrow field, low radiation image. . . ideal for Endodontics.  The panorex mode can be configured to Full or Left/Right side to also lower radiation providing a good screening tool for decay without the need for multiple PA or BW films.  The Kodak/Carestream software is intuitive, easy to use, and produces a CD for mailing to referring colleagues or patients.

The installation of the 9000 is to current, inspected 2014 State of Florida radiation standards providing safety to both patients and staff.  All images are viewed using custom built 3-D “gaming” computers and digital monitors for a detailed, accurate diagnosis.  Image files are stored, transmitted and backed up daily to current HIPAA and HITECH standards.
